What is it like to perform in an orchestra?
Written by Andrew Giampa, violinist.
It's hard to describe the feeling you get when actually playing the music with an orchestra, especially to non-musicians. When you get a large number of people performing on a stage in front of a large audience, it's true that emotions can be magnified and channeled by the group. This is what makes live performance so wonderful, even for the audience - which essentially becomes a part of the ensemble - as they react to and absorb the music. A personal anecdote I'll never forget that helps portray the feeling of performing in a great orchestra follows.
